NEW EPISODE LIVE TODAY 1 PM EST!! How much of the American Revolution do we remember as history — and how much is mythology?
Award-winning historian Richard Bell joins the show to separate the familiar founding story from the much messier reality of the 18th century.
We discuss why Britain cared enormously about Caribbean sugar colonies, the global war that set the Revolution in motion, the economic and land interests of men like Washington and Jefferson, why many colonists had perfectly rational reasons to remain loyal to Britain, what the Boston Tea Party looked like from King George III’s perspective, how propaganda helped sell an alliance with France, and why the American Revolution was ultimately part of a much larger global struggle for empire.
